OTM 2 - "Future Tense"
In this week's on the media, it goes on to describe how past and present President's of the United States have managed the press. A lot of them had a tough relationship with the media. In fact, many Presidents strongly disliked the media. I think it's because media has the capability to publicly state things about someone that can be partially true, but not all true, leaving great room for peoples perspective to be altered. In this case, it would be the current President of the United States of America. Whether that be a positive or negative altercation, it's misleading and unfair to the people. It disables us to make our own opinion because we do not have all the facts.
Jan 1955 was the first televised news conference with President Eisenhower. They were using this form of media in the same way Trump uses twitter now, a way to directly reach the public about issues and or topics in America. The NY post was surprised at how scripted the broadcast was. They made sure that nothing that was in the program would hurt the President. Interesting how the media can either make someone look better or worse than they may really be.
There is no question in my mind that the media wants to be heard, and it's clear that all forms of media try to get people talking. But why does the media enjoy stirring things up so much? Is it because they want high ratings? Do they like drama? Is money a factor? Does the peoples attention play a role? "Money is the motivation" is quite a common term here in America, but when it comes to the media, is money the sole motivation? I would say no. In my eyes, attention is the motivation when it comes to media. Media thrives on attention. If you don't believe me, just look at the news. I think this is one main reason why fake news is so common in today's world. Don't get me wrong, media wants our money too, but if they don't have our initial attention, the money will not follow.
At times I feel as if the media wants our attention so bad, they will say and do almost anything to get it. I have found it difficult to trust what is being said in the news because it's hard to know what has been changed or misinterpreted.
It's good to question and be critical, but when it comes to media, we should stick to the truth; even if it doesn't sound as glamorous. There are times when the media and all of their "digging" can be beneficial for the American people. But are Presidents always honest? Sometimes we can get truth revealed to us about them that otherwise would not have come forward. For example, when President Clinton had an affair. Whoops. This leads me to believe that maybe the reason this came out was because it was such a big scandal, and the media knew that the american people would be all over this story because of the drama that is attached.
I found this quote by Trump to be interesting. "We assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in every foreign capitol, and in every hall of power from this day forward a new issue will govern our land, from this day forward, it's going to be only America first, America first." - President Trump
